LEAHCIM Breeding Direction 2008 and Beyond

Leahcim has made a conscious decision to breed rams that have balanced ASBVs, structual soundness, the ability to perform under harsh conditions and also to produce a high value skin. Our goals are to produce animals with high growth and a positive muscle ASBV that has adequate fat and not tending to be to lean. For many commercial produces who are using merino ewes as there maternal dam having rams that are to lean can cause problems in finishing their lambs. Leahcim would suggest that depending on clients climatic conditions the ideal fat ASBV would be 0.0 to -0.7, they could be leaner if intence grain feeding is to be done. In regard to growth, rams above +9 with a positive eye muscle ASBV can be used in a successful breeding programme.
